What is a domain name?

All web sites have a numerical address, something like 128.123.231.231. That is the actual address of the computer hosting your site. Obviously, this is could be harder to remember than most phone numbers, and that is where domain names come in. They are easy to remember, and that is really the only purpose they serve.
